Yes, we are delivering to businesses and residences throughout South Africa during the restrictions.

The World Health Organisation as well as the South African Health Department have advised that wearing a suitable mask is effective in preventing Covid19 infections spreading. (https://sacoronavirus.co.za/2020/04/10/everyone-should-wear-a-face-mask/)

This mask is a re-usable and washable 3+1 ply medical grade mask made from 2 layers of woven poly-cotton, and 1 internal sleeve that can hold filter media if you wish to have the maximum level of protection. When using filter media this becomes a 4 to 5 ply mask which offers the maximum level of protection comparable to <=N95 masks

This mask is manufactured in our medical facility in South Africa based on US hospital design specifications which have shown more than 90% filtration efficiency when using a range of different filter media. Efficiency is comparable to N95 masks when using our filters and increases up to 99.7% when using Hepa filter media. (Efficiency without any filter media at 3 ply level is approximately 80%)

(see these links for information on how we get to our numbers claimed and also for more information on what materials filter best:

The mask is fitted with two soft 10 cord elastics that hold on the head instead of the ears in order to make wearing the mask comfortable for long periods. (Elastic color is either white or black depending on availability)

Use of soft material on the inner layer is to prevent chafing of the nose. We have incorporated this feature in response to complaints from frontline healthcare workers who are wearing masks for extended periods and experiencing nose chafing and irritation from other materials.

These masks are the preferred fabric medical mask and are now being used by many surgeons, health practitioners, healthcare facilities and government departments throughout South Africa as well as cross border.

These medical masks are available direct to the public as well as health facilities, police and military at this time. (We may limit availability only to health facilities if stocks become limited.)

We are delivering 7 days a week during the lockdown as you can see below:

Important: We allocate a percentage of all masks sold to donate free masks to healthcare and community support organisations. If you are a registered NGO or public health facility and you need masks donated please click here to request: request

(Colors besides white are not available in all sizes, if a color says unavailable, check for other sizes in that color)

Breathability:

Materials used, number of layers and type of filter influence the breathability of any mask. This mask at 3 ply with no filter is approximately 80% effective and very breathable. This is sufficient for use in general office, work & retail environments and public spaces. For healthcare use or if you are caring for a positive patient either a 1 ply or 2 ply filter can be used. With a 1 ply filter the mask is still very breathable but now starts to work as a respirator. With a 2 ply filter (eg. double layer of tissue paper) there is maximum filtration but the breathing difficulty increases and this should generally only be used in high risk environments for a short period of time (around 20 to 60 minutes)

Each mask is made of:

- 2 external layers of woven poly-cotton

- 1 internal layer of soft fabric for comfort and to prevent chafing of the nose. This layer also forms the sleeve for insertion of filter media

- Two soft elastic connections which go around the head and neck for comfort (instead of the ear)

Sterilisation and disinfection:

During this crisis we are taking extra precautions to prevent the spread and transmission of viruses and bacteria. Each mask is heat sterilised and thereafter a process of Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is applied to the masks before being sealed in a BOPP sleeve and then packed and sent to you.

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (ultraviolet C or UVC) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. This is not the same as commonly available UV light lamps or UVA and UVB rays from the sun. UVC is a specialised form of UV light that is only available in devices approved for medical use

Deliveries are made by courier throughout South Africa. (Quantity discounts are available for this product)

Product FAQ:

Are filters included?

Filters are not included with your mask order. 50 gsm filters can now also be purchased from us by clicking here: 50 gsm filter for medical mask

What type of filters can be used?

50gsm Acomed filters (<=N95) , HEPA filters, Paper towels and even tissue paper or wet wipes (once they are dry). Studies from the US show that with this type of mask, while using the 50 gsm filter, it is just as effective as an N95 mask.

How often do I wash this mask?

We recommend that you wash the mask each time you were exposed to people other than your own members of the household. The minimum is that you should change the filter if you are using one each day if you are in a healthcare setting. After washing place the mask in the sun for drying. The UV rays of the sun are very effective at killing viruses.

If you are not working in healthcare or exposed to patients, then you can wash the mask once a week if you are only going out for grocery shopping. Some virologists suggest washing the mask every two uses outside.

If you were exposed to someone who was sick, or sneezing, or coughing then you should wash the mask immediately after returning.

You should always be careful when removing a mask that you avoid touching the front part of the mask. Wash your hands immediately after removing the mask and before touching your face.

How many times can I wash the mask before it loses its effectiveness?

Studies have not concluded what effect washing has on the filtration ability of mask fabrics. We do not suggest using strong detergents for washing your mask as it is thought they may damage the fibres and affect filtration sooner. It is preferred to use a standard detergent or soap and water and then leave the mask in the sun to dry. Check the mask for tears and wear from washing. If you notice this then the effectiveness of the mask has definitely decreased and you should use a new mask.

A safe guide would be to only wash the mask 60 times before using a new mask. While the fabric may appear intact we do not recommend using a mask that has been washed more than 90 times as micro tears may occur in the fabric from the washing process

Do you deliver during lockdown?

Yes, we are a medical supply company that is open and delivering during the lockdown

How long does delivery take?

During the lockdown couriers are managing deliveries between 2 to 5 working days from despatch (depending which part of South Africa you live in), production time is 1 to 2 days. Out of lockdown, delivery time by courier is normally 2 to 4 days.

How do I know what size I need?

Since a mask is not a regular item of clothing and is more about function than fashion, it does not lend itself to the same sizing conventions as regular clothing.

As a general rule average teens will find the small size suitable, average adult females will find medium comfortable and adult males will find the large size to be comfortable.

Please note that the kids size mask does not have a filter sleeve

How do these masks compare to N95 respirators?

Normally N95 respirators are single use only, however during times of pandemic crises they are sometimes classed as "limited reuse" when N95 respirators are in short supply. They can therefore be used a limited number of times while observing proper infection control procedures. This is however not the normal scenario. The 3+1 Mask however is classed for reuse and can be washed to be reused again.

The N95 respirator is tested to stop 95% of 0.3 micron size particles from passing through the respirator when the N95 mask is fitted properly.

The 3+1 mask filtration efficiency varies between 80% and 99.7% depending on the filtration media used. Without any filtration media placed in the sleeve it is approximately 80% effective. While using our 50gsm filters the filtration is <=95% which is comparable with an N95 mask. If you use the highest quality HEPA filter pad in the sleeve then the efficiency can go up to 99.7%.

The seal in the 3+1 is also very effective and assists with prevention of virus particles entering when the elastic straps are secured correctly behind the head. The upper nose flap also assists with sealing and those who wear glasses can place the bridge of the spectacles over this portion for better holding.

Please note that due to the overwhelming demand for these masks by South African civilians & health practitioners, production sometimes takes 3 to 4 days before despatch.
